ASID Award for Charleston Condominium
November 2, 2022
The American Society of Interior Design (ASID) recently presented MDI with four Excellence in Design Awards for four of our recent projects. This week we will walk you through one of our award-winning homes.
Our Downtown Dockside condominium was awarded first place for a residence under 3500 square feet. These waterfront condominiums were built in the 1980s and are one of Charleston’s only high-rise buildings. The units provide views of the harbor, downtown Charleston, and the iconic Ravenel Bridge.
The owner of this unit wanted to update the functionality and aesthetic of this home to a more upscale and sophisticated look. We chose to stick to a neutral palette of gray and white with dark wood, natural stone, and brass detailing. Sometimes working with such a neutral palette can limit the creativity of the space; however, we were able to layer elements and textures to create a feeling of warmth and elegance.
We were challenged with this project as we had to work within the boundaries of the existing condominium building. We had to remain consistent with the original framing and be mindful of the existing doors, ceiling heights, and depth of flooring materials.
MDI worked closely with the architect to remove the closets and replace them with more functional wardrobes with the homeowner’s specific needs in mind.
We had a strong designer, architect, builder, and client team from day one, which allowed us to influence each piece of the design process.
We feel honored to receive an ASID award for this beautiful Charleston Dockside condominium.
